Workplace Wellness

The Millennium Institute of Sport & Health is renowned in the areas of sport, health, fitness and nutrition. The Millennium Institute Workplace Health Programme aims to bring the Institute’s vision of ‘excellence in sports performance and in personal health, recreation and fitness' to the workplace.

Personal gains such as increased fitness, improved self-esteem and self-motivation, enhanced time and stress management and improved nutrition can substantially benefit both the employer and the employee.

New Zealand has some stark reminders of the state of our lifestyle practices influencing our health:

1. One in five adults have been told they have high blood pressure

2. One in six adults have been told they have high cholesterol

3. Approximately one in two adults are overweight or obese

4. One in four adults is a current smoker

The incidence of these risk factors combined with increasing rates of lifestyle disease has lead to a national imperative to address health in the workplace. Recent research validates that health promotion programmes in the workplace can improve health, save money and produce a return on investment.

The following provides a snapshot of some of our offerings.

BeWell WorkWell Programme

Before implementing any Workplace Health programme, the first critical step (which is often missed) is a needs analysis to ensure that real workplace requirements are identified. What we think we need, and what we actually need can often be extremely different!

This package is non-invasive, easily accessible and gives you direct feedback on what areas of health and wellness need to be addressed in your business and ensures that any product we give you is directly linked to what your employees have told us.

Cape to Bluff

The Cape to the Bluff Step Challenge© is a workplace challenge and initiative that encourages people to become more physically active while enhancing team morale within your organisation.

Using pedometers (step counters worn on the waistband) people are able to monitor their daily accumulated activity. In teams, people are required to monitor their daily accumulated activity and travel the distance from Cape Reinga to the Bluff within six weeks. The researched gold standard is that individuals need to take 10,000 steps per day for health benefits.

Health Fairs

Health fairs are highly interactive and give the participants a chance for small group discussions and activities with a health professional in your workplace. A series of stations are set up in your workplace with a theme in mind and your workplace is split into smaller groups to spend a short amount of time at each station. Example stations may include exercise, nutrition, posture, stretching, beauty therapy or goal setting.

Team Activities

As an organisation committed to reaching sporting excellence, the Millennium Institute of Sport & Health understands the value and importance of teamwork.

Drawing on our experience in sport we have developed activities and programmes to help enhance the teamwork of organisations.

One of our core group activities is
CREW - Teamwork in the Workplace

Through the personal experiences of Chief Executive Mike Stanley, a former world rowing champion, the Millennium Institute offers workplace teams the opportunity to learn more about the teamwork and thrill of rowing. This is conducted through an in-depth talk highlighting key areas of teamwork for a business and individual and some practical strategies to incorporate these into daily functioning. The session also includes an optional practical rowing session on the lake.

“The teamwork required to make an eight go fast has many parallels in business. Through CREW I share my experiences in rowing and thoughts on what makes a successful team and then participants get the opportunity of developing and testing their own teamwork, and experience the thrill of rowing in an eight" Mike says.

The Millennium Institute also provides the ideal environment for staff team activities which can also offer a worthwhile add-on element to staff conferences or initiatives. We also offer tailored team activities off-site at your workplace or function venue. These incorporate a variety of workshops, games or exercises to suit your individual requirement and budget.
