Schools Learn to Swim Programme

The Millennium Institute runs flexible learn to swim programmes for schools that focus on improving skills and confidence in the water. These lessons are available year round and are run by qualified and experienced instructors.

Aims of the Programme

  • Everyone able to swim to survive

This is the key aim of the learn-to-swim programme, focusing on the teaching of the basic skills necessary to survive in the water.

  • Development of motor skills and understanding about movement
  • Creation of healthy communities and environments

These secondary aims are based on the Physical Education and Health curriculum objectives for New Zealand schools.

Learn to Swim Programme Structure

  • All lessons begin with a formative assessment to establish the level of each child

  • Children will then be grouped into ability levels, and their lessons tailored to the needs of each level

  • Lessons are usually taken in groups of 8 or over 8 weeks, although this is flexible depending on the timetabling needs of your school

  • Children will also have a summative assessment and be awarded a colourful certificate recognising their level of achievement, which can be used in portfolios or report writing

  • Lessons are delivered year round in our indoor heated pool

Schools Water Safety Programme

The aim of the Water Safety Programme is to help young people to be safe in and around water - at home, in public pools, at the beach, in lakes, rivers or out at sea. The programme teaches key water safety principles and develops the necessary attitudes, skills and behaviours to use and enjoy our water environments safely.

Water Safety Programme Structure

  • 40 minute water safety theory session which highlights key water safety messages with the introduction of technical water safety equipment

  • 40 min practical session for primary-age children, 60 min practical session for intermediate-age children including deep water boat drills, experiencing lifejacket buoyancy in the water, and survival positions

Water Safety Programme Goals

  • Prevention: Provide information and skills that will prevent water safety tragedies occurring by raising awareness of ?personal limitations, potential dangers and balancing peer pressure

  • Skills: Provide skills that will improve the chances of survival once in a dangerous situation. Students will develop a wide range of movement skills to encourage safety and confidence in fabricated events.

  • Interpersonal skills: Interpersonal skills are central to prevention and survival once in dangerous situations. Students should be encouraged to communicate and discuss their ideas/strategies for successful water safety.

An emphasis will be placed on the students coordinating the water safety skills themselves once they have had an appropriate introduction.

Testimonial from New Zealand Coast Guard

“This programme emphasises the key messages from our Safe Boating programme in a stimulating and interactive way, ensuring that the experience is both valuable and fun for the children.

The programme is tailor-made to suit the school, incorporating any time constraints, the age, and level of confidence of the children.

The experience is not only extremely valuable, but also great fun! All children are constantly supervised and monitored in a safe environment. Swimmers and non-swimmers alike enjoy the experience and find it a challenge. The importance of helping each other and working as a team is also very rewarding.

Coastguard Boating Education is delighted to endorse and support the Water Safety Module and provide Safe Boating certificates to all who attend. We see this as an important first step in creating safer boaties for our future.?/span>
